Sam, you are not serious are you?

Just because a patent is non-obvious to you does not make it meaningless. If that were the case, 99.9% of all patents would be "meaningless" (not just to you but to all of us).

I don't know. But they have patents on many, many of the basic functions of DVRs. I think they even have one on "time shifting"; the essence of the device. As this is their first defense of their IP, they may have chosen something that is easy to explain to a jury, so that the trial is shorter (and cheaper), or they may have picked the one that is easiest to defend. Just WAG on my part.

I haven't seen an article that talks about the exact patent that they are defending; so you have a link?
