The radical Salafi movement is exclusively Sunni. Why conflate them?

Good old Tom. Cuts right to the chase.

Me, I would dump the whole WMD thing, reestablish ties and open trade, ending all sanctions. Then let the mullahs explain their rule to their unhappy masses

And what an easy explanation for the Mullahs that would be: Our tactics have worked, the Americans are afraid. Let's continue doing what has worked--terrorism and our nuclear program. Our goal of destroying Israel is now unimpeded.

Free trade will simply quell any dissent within Iran by taking economics out of the picture.

Whenever we see a state get nukes, the war we assume must happen never does.

What a foolish thing to say. It will not happen because it has never happened before. Reminds me of the thinking we've had around here: the levees haven't yet broken, they're therefore OK.

Barnett is an original, but he's full of it on this one.

But all that was true in far greater degree and scope with USSR and yet we cut SALT. Connectivity--via the "hard dollar" in trade--kills their socialist economy and authoritarian state within 16 years--and they cursed us all the way to their collapse

I think Barnett is great, but I think he's wrong on Iran. We don't have 16 years. It took a decade to kill the last vestiges of authoritarianism in Ukraine and Georgia, two essentially Western, non-culturally hostile societies.

The mullahs can recognize a Trojan horse as well as anyone else.

I don't buy Barnett's Grand Compromise with Iran. We have nothing to bargain with. The mullahs believe they will dominate the region and have nuclear weapons, with or without us. They don't need our permission, and they don't think we can stop them. And I think any talk of recognizing Israel would be empty as their underrobes.
