Because there is no rational basis for their positions.

It is a philosophy driven by personal greed.

At the core of everything they espouse politically is the drive to eliminate THEIR taxes or otherwise self enrich.

All of their positions are derivative of that core belief.

They can be programmed to believe or say anything as long as they protect that core value...greed.

I think you're a bit short sighted there koan. Both Dems and reps are equally responsible for the mess this country finds itself in. Mr. Compassion Clinton gave the go ahead in Waco. That's was a pretty cold blooded move. I think you've gotta go pre Lincoln to find any decent presidents.

"They never get it and I do not know why?"

The answer is because it is about greed, control and power, the failure to understand the value of the "common good" is every sense of the word. Ultra conservative thinking and practices is social regression, nothing more or less that the law of the jungle, as such it undermines virtually all elements of social evolution. Current world military expenditures is running about 1 trillion dollars per year with the US accounting for about 500 billion. I wonder what the world would be like if we were to apply those funds to the eradication of illiteracy, disease and poverty. To reflect on the words of John Lennon.......

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one.

Well believe it or not I fell for it and voted for Bush in 2000. I also voted for Raygun in 1980. Learned my lesson twice burnt.

Even with out Reagan's little wars and Bushes big ones the repugs claim to create a "good" economy by lowering taxes. (Then they throw the blame on the demons for being the spenders.) Talk about creating prosperity by borrowing. What a joke.

Repubs will need to trot out Osama and his friends big time in more ways than one to get through these mid term elections. That is a reason to own gold though not the reason I would want to own gold for insurance.
