I'd venture the guess that the most prominent effect on AMD's revenue will not be from Dell but from the other customers improving their Opteron lineup to counter the perceived threat from Dell's Opteron based products.

They may also push harder into other segments where Dell doesn't yet plan to employ AMD to sustain their taking of market share from Mikey.

The further out and the more symbolic Dell's commitment is, the more it may actually benefit AMD because the established customers like HP, IBM or SUN will make more money using the products Dell only does kabuki around.

re: it's almost as if [Dell's] waiting for 65nm. If so -- why? AMD is the only game in town with 4P today. Gotta assume that 65nm will be pretty good.

...or waiting for QC.

Pravin,

If Dell is serious (I give it a 50% probability; cynical Pravin), it's almost as if they are waiting for 65nm. If so -- why? AMD is the only game in town with 4P today. Gotta assume that 65nm will be pretty good.

I think Dell will only do Socket 1207 Opteron, therefore, they can't launch anything before it is available (Summer?). There may be a month or 2 lag from 1207 launch and Dell availability, which could make it September to October, which is before the end of year.

I don't think 65nm has very much to do with it. The first 65nm Opteron 8xx may be in 2007.

Joe

Pravin, on effect of Dell's 4P Opteron offering

Would you think that Dell's move to offer the 4P Opteron (surely this is 4S/8P right now, right?) is going to increase the pressure on IBM to have something to counter?
