It's hard to know what kind of "culture" is at issue when people use the word "culture" and don't say what they mean. I was already clear on the fact that you like our culture just fine the way it is (however it is that you imagine it to be at this exact moment). I think I'd prefer not to explore that any further- thanks all the same.

I picked up on the icky nativism/racism right away. Almost commented, then changed my mind until I see you two disagreeing on how obvious it is.

Because of their humanity, culture and language, the workers and their families who cross the borders are far more influential than even the destabilizing flow of goods from China.

Yuck.

And also the boneheadedness:

If employers paid higher than substandard wages, Americans (who famously do almost anything for money, including eating worms, shooting themselves from cannons and listening to Barbra Streisand sing) would take these jobs.

Really, the beauty is that it summarizes the two stupidist arguments against immigration reform:

1) Immigrants will destroy our culture.

2) Immigrants will steal "our" jobs.

It seems obvious to me that the people who come here FROM Mexico are fleeing from Mexico's economy, prison system, class structure and economic disparity.

Which is not to say that they are incapable of attempting to replicate the same here, if only from a failure of imagination.

But the beauty of the American system is that they cannot replicate Mexico's economy, prison system, class structure or economic disparity here, even if they wanted to (I think they don't).
