re: Doesn't mean a thing. One independent might be a Buchanan conservative, one might be a libertarian, one might be a environmental activist, etc.

You can say the same for people that call themselves Dems or Reps. The vast majority that call themselves independents don't give a crap about the parties and just want functional government. Just because you are off the wall partisan don't project it to "silent majority".

re: I remember the old "third party" thread, which looked more like a wish for the Dems to adopt a more well-defined center-left platform.

States rights on social issues? Your fellow bible thumpers would be in hog heaven.

"I remember the old "third party" thread, which looked more like a wish for the Dems to adopt a more well-defined center-left platform."

Let's see. Eliminating special interest legislation, balanced budget, moving social issues to state and local level, energy conservation, dealing with illegal immigration...

Yep, all very leftist policies. Yep I can see that.

Now granted, there were some elements like trying to deal with the growing disparity between top level executives and the rank and file that can be considered left of center. But to then brand all of it leftist because of that is like the old idea that a single black ancestor was enough to classify someone as a Negro...

This is precisely the sort of partisan BS that I talked about in the header. And led to the thread dissolving into bickering. Blind partisanship is stupid.
