The israelis took out the PLO in lebanon and iranian/syrian backed hizbollah filled the vacuum.

It certainly didn't prevent us from destroying both the Taliban, the government that harbored Al Qai'da, as well as the terrorist organization itself. Reports of the destruction of both the Taliban and Al Qai'da, seem, as Mark Twain put it, to be greatly exaggerated.

"The PLO presence in Lebanon was EVERY BIT as much a product of Syria (and other nations hostile to Israel) as is Hizbullah." Hizbullah arose because of a need not because of Syria or Iran. Syria and Iran saw an opportunity and took advantage of it. "What has created the environment for the rise of Hizbullah, or any other armed militia in that country has been both the support from nations like Syria and Iran, as well as the general unwillingness/inability for the Lebanese government to establish sovereign control over its borders." Puts the cart before the horse. Israel's intransigence opened up for the PLO. PLO's corruption opened up for Hamas and Hizbullah. "When nations like Syria and Iran recognize the futility (repercussions) of using proxy militias to perpetuate their war against Israel, then groups like Hizbullah will diminish in power" So far Syria and Iran have not had any reason to believe that repercussions will occur. If they did then popular support for PLO, Hamas, and Hizbullah will probably increase. By not recognizing Hamas and by kidnapping elected members of parliament and government leaders the west has brought the doomsday scenario closer, Chemical, biological, and dirty conventional bombs falling on Israel with nuclear retaliation as a result. Everyone looses.
