I think we've helped ... at times. Look at Israel's relations with Egypt and Jordan. The US played a key role.

If we are not going to be a peace broker, why are we involved at all?

It seems to me that a lot of progress toward peace has been made at times. Those times are when Cheney and his crowd are furthest away from the strings of power. Reagan let the Camp David accords stagnate, and Bush Jr. ignored the progress made during Clinton's term while allowing Sharon to practacly moon the Palestinians from temple mount.
