The problem is that the US and Israeli militaries are upset that their opponents or enemies or conquests refuse to pay their kind of ball. They keep doing what they want to do regardless of the results on the ground or in world opinion.

The US is close to spending as much time in Iraq as we spent on WWII. It's inane and a waste of taxpayer money and US and Iraqi lives.

Israel seems destined to live in eternal conflict blaming the rest of the world that it is anti-Semitic. It's inane and will likely be overrun by the demographics anyway.

Neither rightwing government can admit mistakes, can change course and can do something different. Their only answer is more brutality, more bombs, more money and more human misery.
This is like someone saying, 'beatings will continue until morale improves.'

Yep, that works. Yep, that's moral.

Hi Nadine Carroll; Re: "Hizbullah has dug hundreds of bunkers ... Why ... Why ... if ... why ... why ..."

Great questions but they miss the point. The point is that Israel has been forced by international opinion to stop bombing southern Lebanon. You can blame it on the heartlessness of Hezbollah if you want. I would think that Bush was who made the Israelis stop, or maybe international opinion, so the blame should be placed there, not on Hezbollah. Hezbollah is just using the media as a part of their campaign against Israel. This should not come as a surprise.

On the other hand, this brings up another possibility for ending the conflict: Announce that because of your humanitarian concerns, you're not going to push ahead to victory. And while this "victory" is proclaimed, the country continues to get pelted with Hezbollah rockets. Only a center left guy like Olmert could come up with that sort of an idea.

In Israel's case it's a bit hollow since they have never enjoyed a true victory in the sense that the US was victorious in the second world war. One doubts that it is possible for a tiny country like Israel to demand the unconditional surrender of its far more numerous enemies. This gets back to that old statement about how Israel must win ALL their wars, the Arabs need win only once.

I still don't see how Israel is going to avoid a full scale invasion of Lebanon. Maybe the government will have to fall first, but I expect to eventually see them do a significant call up of the reserves. The alternative seems unimaginable.

This still begs the question, why doesn't Israel hit Syria and Iran directly? It has the arms, it has been making noises about Iran for a very long time, it has (I imagine) the support of Bush and his Neocon buds....

Why won't Israel go to the source of their problem?

Why hit and kill some 500 civilians and destroy infrastructure WHEN THEY KEEP SAYING that Hezbollah is just a proxy and that Lebanon is weak and, therefore, blameless? Do you think this is going to lead to an actual shooting war with Iran and Syria anytime soon?

Do you think that the US will join in this venture?
