The French do not have a great military tradition. They don't egven have a great athletic tradition. They were no match for the Nazi war machine and they knew it. That's not to say they were cowards. That bit has been overplayed. Amost every European country surrendered to the Nazis. Only the Brits held out. Also there were plenty of Frenchmen who fought in the resistance and died. Yes the French are jealous of the US, in some ways, but it's mainly a language problem. If the French language were spoken in more countries, their books, films, plays and culture would be more globally popular. As is, they are a world unto themselves and limited. But they definitely don't hate Americans, just rightwing Bushies. Most of the world hates (or distrusts is a better word) rightwing Bushies. Also, now everyone knows the French were right about Bush's plan to invade Iraq. They were right not to join Bush. Bush's Iraq adventure is a huge catastrophe.
