If you read the book, the above wouldn't be a bad thing. In the book, to be able to vote you needed to have performed some sort of service, military or otherwise. And, IIRC, military wasn't the most popular, just the one chosen by the viewpoint character.

Colin Powell and McCain for instances are not Bushies. Both have been vocal at various times about opposing Bush's policies. Powell may not even be a Republican and Gore was going to appoint him as well. Chuck Hagel is a combat vet who strongly opposes Bush.

All the smart, ethical combat vets oppose Bush now. Think about that.
