3. Test drive the car. This is tricky, because you have to go to a dealer and interact with them. They are going to photocopy your drivers license before you test drive the car. If it has your correct address, tell them its dated and give them a different address.

Actually it's pretty slimy.

On Monday evening I called two local Honda dealers, told them I was going to buy through CarsDirect but would get it from them instead if they would match the price. Both said no. One laughed at me before saying no.

On Tuesday afternoon the car was delivered to my house by two very nice retired men. I test drove the car, took a picture, signed the paperwork and wrote a check. They left. Total time spent: 30 minutes.


Last part of the story should have been:

On Wednesday afternoon, I drove by the two dealerships who had refused to match the Cars Direct price to show them my new car. I laughed at both of the salesmen who had lost an easy sale.

[as a practical matter, if they knew they could sell the car for thousands more to another customer, why should they match the Cars Direct price?]

PS - Last time I got a new car I used an auto broker. It was a similar process. I decided what car I wanted, and he found it for me. I paid a $300 fee to the broker who arranged everything. Very stress free buying experience.

This piece is especially good. I made my way though school selling cars. If I wanted to move away from my Moped, I would probably check them out

I bought my truck in 2000 through Priceline, which no longer sells cars. I loved it. I saved a couple grand over what I probably would've paid by haggling.

It's the way to go, IMO.

When I bought my Infiniti, I faxed requests for prices to sales managers up and down the east coast. A little more work than using a service by Cars Direct but I think I probably got a better price.

I did however have to travel to get the car.
