"But, we have to fix Iraq before we leave."

This is as wrongheaded as Bush's original plan. Only the Iraqis can "fix" Iraq. It's likely to be a bloody, horrible affair, but the sooner we get out of the middle, the sooner the Iraqis can self-determine what sort of country they want to be.

We probably won't like it. Saddam may have been preferable.

The best thing we might do is withdraw a subset of our forces into Kurdistan to keep Turkey out of there, and attempt to keep foreign actors from having too much influence with air power.

Bidens plan or WW1 redux in middle east are fast becoming the choices. Sunni states getting ready to intervene in some fashion to stop shiaa. I was thinking this and Sun pm'd me about this too. To get three states shiaa militias will have to know when and where to stop. Dividing Bagdad and population transfers might be part of the answer but once its all done, there must be law and order and little sectarian violence where the minorities exist--sunni in shiaa state and shiaa in sunniland. And as for the Kurds, the US must broker a deal between them and Turks. Kurds have to lead the fight against kurdish islamic extremists within turkey as a first step. They cant be allowed to become taliban hopping back and forth between turkey and kurdistan.
Also keep in mind in three state only two states have oil. They may promise sunniland money but its not likely to come. Sunniland may have to be pacified by mod arab states. Perhaps even incorportated into one of them. Sunniland cant be allowed to become Gaza or to be ruled by TaliBaath..
