Same dilemma in Northern Ireland; the fighters never amounted to more than several hundred hardcore on each side but they were enough to keep the conflict going for many years and intimidate the moderates into submission.

I don't know about the greater Moslem world but in the arab world, where I worked for seven years, they think that we westerners who reject their prophet are lower than the lowest animal and that we all deserve to die. This is not universal but is the general view at all levels of arab society. Some Sunnis may think that their Shia brethren rank lower than we do. You may have had a different experience. This is my opinion from my own experience. I will not debate this. We may agree to disagree.
