2) Move the university from Fairbanks to Juneau

The university is in Fairbanks? Was the state rep withholding votes until his district got some pork or something? That's a mighty chilly place to go to college.

The Juneau highway is fraught with environmental consequences and can't possibly eliminate the need for a ferry.

Your proposal makes sense from a logical view and even from an economic view once completed. However, we can probably both vouch for the economic carnage that would impinge on individuals.

I remember real estate values crashing in Anchorage after a dizzying runup and the same has happened in Juneau many times. Boom and bust, boom and bust. That is terribly hard on people who must move in and out regardless.

When I moved to Juneau we had to pay through the nose to get our house and were lucky to get it. Although it had a nice design it was loaded with poor workmanship, plus the environmental stress on all houses. The market ran up a little after that, then plateaued. When we had to sell our house it took 18 months and we took a beating. That meant a beating on both ends for us, and it was devastating.

Multiply that by thousands and it's unacceptable unless the state finds a way to stabilize real estate values.

I've got another idea: Move ALL US prisons to Fairbanks. Or better yet some place like Adak. That would be a real deterrent to crime and the breakout rate would be low indeed.

I don't know how big the University in Fairbanks is, but there's precious little space for it in Juneau. Moving the capital to Anchorage sounds too much like the big guy beating up on the little guy.
