You are assuming that "knowing" has to be founded on evidence. It doesn't. I think they (or at least some of them) really believed there were WMD's. It's just as bad as lying, but it's a different verb.

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

- Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."

- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

The UN knew he had WMD and it was Saddams obligation to disarm or prove he destroyed it. He refused to comply with that binding agreement.

Many intelligence agencies around the world knew that Saddam had WMD and were on record saying so.

No lie.Perhaps bad information...or perhaps Sadaam did a good job hiding and destroying it to embarass others.

We may never know.

But still...no proof of lies.
