"So, the SIMPLE answer is empower the SHIA to BRUTALLY PUT DOWN the Sunni's"

In other words... get Uncle Sucker out of the middle of the civil war --- where *both* sides are using the US as an excuse for all their failures, and each trying to get the Americans to do the fighting *for them* --- and let the locals settle their own hash. No need to 'empower' anyone (they have more then enough military potential already, no need to fan the flames, or 'pick' one side over the other).

An EXCELLENT idea!

"If you are correct there IS a simple answer. There are FAR LESS SUNNI than SHIA and take away the Kurds, who want nothing to do with either, you have even less potential terrorists. So, the SIMPLE answer is empower the SHIA to BRUTALLY PUT DOWN the Sunni's, whilst we put a ring around the countries borders to keep out foreign interference. Maybe we were wrong to think of SADR as a terrorist. I see now that his militia has stepped down many bombs are going off in Baghdad. This would be Democratic as the Shia and the Kurds represent at least 80% of the country. The problem is what will YOU say if we allow that? jdn"

Well, some of us have been calling for a part of this "solution" for months, if not years....Pull our troops back to the borders and contain the inflow of foreign fighters. Make it clear to Sunni and Shia (the Kurds have already figured it out) that they need to figure out how to survive together, or they will have to figure out - without our troops playing middleman - how to NOT get along, a.k.a, divide themselves or kill each other....The division is already occuring. We provide the money, men and justification for the zealots to keep blowing things up. Fine, let them blow each other up, but not us....

Now, if we follow this path would the Saudis sit by and let the less-numerous Sunni get slaughtered? Would the Syrians? And, would the Iranians be able to resist helping the Shia? I have no idea. But, as many on this thread, principally Buddy, has noted...our national interests would be better served by this action than what we are doing now...If Iraq is to be a nation, they will have to settle it themselves. My bet is that they won't and like Yugoslavia (the best modern example of a nation cobbled together after World War I that had no business being one nation), they will find their own way of sorting out the issue. It will be bloody. it will be ugly. But their blook (if they feel SO strongly about it), not our men and women's.

I agree with the consensus that the Iraqi's have to figure it out themselves. Maybe we should broker a peaceful (as possible) ethnic cleansing.

That said I wonder if part of this new crackdown will involve turning the Shia loose against the Sunni which is sort of what Maliki has been calling for.

The trouble with fighting insurgents though is they melt into the population and come out at night to try to kill you. If the crackdown is successful I bet they simply wait it out.
