"1987 Omnibus Tax Bill that disallowed big middle-class tax deductions, such as sales tax."

That was the point. Remove deductions aka tax shelters and lower rates---your sales tax allowance under the old system subsidized those fancy cars and fur coats you were buying at the time. Under Reagan, incentives moved toward investment and a way from profligerate spending which is why the Hollywood crowd you run with freaked out. (g)

PS The poor got a lot more from lower rates, higher threshhold than they ever got from sales tax deduction which they couldnt take anyway because they couldnt freakin itemize in the first place. If you feel so bad for the poor, please try to understand what they go thru and not what susan sarandon tells you.

"Like I said last night, if you vote Republican you are most likely voting against your own long term economic self-interests."

You sound like one of those brainwashed public school teachers we were talking about when vouchers were the subject. So sure you are right about Economics which is sure the science that even PhDs know so little about. Do you have an advanced degree in Economics or is that you just read Krugman who is about the worst economist out there?

Excellent post Katelew..

I am reeling today having been to my accountant to the large tax that I am going to have to come up with due to the AMT..

That is a dastardly penalty tax... '

More people in this society are penalized for saving and earning returns on their money than in blowing everything and having big credit card run ups... We penalize the savers and reward the spenders..

Just abhor our tax system for it's inequities... The very wealthy have all kinds of gimmicks to avoid taxes and the middle class which I consider myself to be are the bearers of the tax burden.

The Republicans have spent money as though it has an inexhaustible supply.

The MILLIONS that went out of the Federal Reserve in one dollar bills that was lost in Iraq... with no accountability just angers me.

The money spent above the military budget which is buried that pays the contractors outrageous sums of money without ever having had a BID. When I have work done on my homes I have at least three bids.

Both parties are bad and as my accountant today said... this government has been corrupt for the past 50 years. However, as
CONSERVATIVE person when it comes to fiscal matters I am totally dismayed at the spending for this war and no accounting for where the money is even going. JUST PRINT MORE...

"The reality is that in a capitalist structure, we will always have a bottom quintile of wage earners, most of whom are doing NECESSARY AND IMPORTANT work that doesn't need a college education.

Should we have a goal of creating college educated janitors, street cleaners, construction workers, etc?

If we somehow educate everybody and end up with a nation of gastro-enterologists, who takes care of the plumbing problem in my kitchen sink?"

------------

With capitation, I've heard that pediatricians in SF receive $5/month/child regardless of what services they give to said child.

I would suggest that plumbers can make very large sums of money as can electricians and other construction folk and that there is little inherent difference between taking care of 90% of human physical ailments and fixing a car. Thus there is much drinking and grumbling in the ranks of physicians.

If everyone were assigned to sweep the streets and clean the schools as part of community service, we'd have a better society.

Many physicians, attorneys and academics I know are complete idiots.

:)

What exactly is a capitalist and a capitalist structure these days?

It was a Democratic Congress that passed the AMT. The purpose was to keep those millionaires from not paying any tax. What will it take to wake people up. You're still voting against your economic self-interest.
