When I lived in CA, the city of Buena Vista, CA is pronounced:

bwayna vista

I live in Colorado now with their own Buena Vista that's pronounced:

boo-na vista

It took a while not to mispronounce the CO city when we moved here.

In the NYC area Houston Street is pronounced the way you would pronounce "mouse" except with an "H." Yet we pronounce Houston, Texas and Sam Houston the way the rest of the country does. Just call it one of those quirks of the English language. I guess it falls under "when in Rome, do as the Romans do."
