Have you ever read the NT passage from I Thes 5:21?

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good

One might argue that this is pretty equivalent to the Buddhist text, accept "Prove" might be a higher bar than "knowning" if something is good. IMO, they are pretty equivalent in meaning here.

Regarding the validity of personal experience, thought experiments, & navel gazing. I have great respect for the fact that we are emotional animals (as are most other animals AFAIK) and that this is very important for morality & ethics IMO. However, I'm circumspect on the subject wrt to science. One example I'm reminded of is the death of JFK Jr. in his plane. Many years ago (WWI era IIRC) some British chap figured out why pilots flying through clouds went into spins and died: Out senses are not to be trusted. It is a lesson worth remembering.
