Your analysis is spot on. The dems can go larger than life with their portly Goracle. He needs to tone down his bush hatred which is real and counterproductive imo.
McCain has proven that he has failed to learn the lesson about vietnam which is really the simple business maxim about throwing good money after bad. In the iraq case you are also throwing good lives after good lives.
Rudy has to overcome a bevy of personal stuff about him and his babe. Combined they have been married six times--does that make them mormons? I wonder. Then there is his estranged son--the tiger wannabee at duke. Newt is a no-go because he is hillary squared in public opinion terms. Maybe Freddy Law and order Thomson has the gravitas? But anyone from the right who emerges has to learn the vietnam lesson to have a chance. 5 years into a war allied with and fighting against crazy arabs (joke, joke) is more than the american public can take. WAr was lost when bush failed to listen to Colin Powell early on about number of troops. Any chance they had to win, and looking back with 20/20 hindsight winning would never be a sure thing, was lost when rummy did war on the lite.

I like Hagel on the Republican side......I think he would appeal to a lot of the middle of the road voters. Seems very moderate and doesn't seem to have a problem distancing himself from the neocons. Haven't heard much about lately though.....
