We saw commies everywhere. Problem was history shows we were often right in our fears but wrong in our policies to counter those fears. Those were the days we could have spent a lot of money to help vulnerable democracies survive rather than help the militaries and other landed interests to take over.
Tell me a little about Lumumba and the Congo situation? What would have happened without the US?

Sadly, neolib, you are right.

My affinity with the current DRC---an oxymoron if I ever heard one---- ( aka, Zaire and the Belgian Congo )--though, virtually, from a musical POV has led me down a studied geo-political path beginning with King Leopold.

Patrice Lumumba , along with Leon Trotsky, FDR, et.al, numbers in the top ten of my " idols."

During that era and, beyond, America saw the world in black and white---or rather red and white. A stark pallet, indeed.
