Pete, I once read Intel uses an extraordinary precise mechanism to fix the position of light vs. mask vs. wafer. This might offset some of the advantage AMD/IBM otherwise might have.

Rink

Thank you for pointing out that guys who is 2nd is smarter they are using a superior processing method. Double patterning allow reuse of existing equipment. Doing it once with immersion is more productive but got to get new equipment. Is the higher productivity going to offset the capital cost? Isn't it ironic that the rich guy choose to reuse while the poor guy choose to buy new. (let's not forget that IBM decides for AMD)

All the advantages that AMD enjoyed resulted in profit cycles of a few quarters followed by red a dozen or more quarters.

Allow me to preempt your reply :

The losses could well be AMD financial genius of not having to pay taxes. On top of that, AMD gets tax credits for the losses, another advantage over intel.

Why make money when you can issue convertibles? Some day in he distant future, stock goes up again, note holders convert, and the debt will be wiped out. AMD have been using this recipe the past decade. AMD makes money FROM shareholders and it is tax free!!!
