Most people who oppose Bush on these threads have been opposing him since long before the Iraq war. They opposed his first election, they opposed his appointees, they opposed his tax cuts, they opposed his war in Afghanistan, indeed they opposed the very essence of Bush. So even though my opinion of what ought to be done now in Iraq may be similar in substance to that of many of the Bush bashers, I am comfortable that my view is based on information and not venom. As for the bashers, they were bound to get one right, for even the blind squirrel finds the occasional acorn.

Other than holding on to magical thinking or trying to win political advantage by extending the war until the other party stops it so you can lay the "blame" on them for "losing," there is no point.

The Republicans repeated the question "Who lost China?" throughout the 50s with some success. They may be trying to set up a similar charge, "Who lost Iraq?" At the very least, they will try to "share" the "blame" with peaceniks and Democrats--after all, "if only they would have allowed Petreaus the time to succeed in his mission..." or "they kept lifting the morale of the enemy, with people like that on your side, you can't win..." or ... pick your "reason."

And, unhappily, there will be plenty of mindless patriots who will believe them. Again and again. As the Man said, you can fool some of the people all of the time.
