In an atmosphere lacking coercive oppression, good ideas are bound to rise to the surface. Where promoting democracy contributes to such an atmosphere, I am all for it; However, when we attempt to coerce others into accepting democracy in an unwelcome atmosphere, we may find we are acting in a counter productive manner, at least in the short run. Invitation beats coercion every time.

I thought Hawk made a pretty good point about the tens of millions killed by the Communists in Russia. The dlot crippled his own military just before WW2 because he killed so many officers in his paranoia.

The US and Europe make me think of how Europe and America were before WW2: peace at any price. The US went into isolation, thinking its oceans insulated it from trouble. Chamberlain came back from Munich with a piece of paper bearing his and Hitler's signatures and said it was "peace in our time". Less than a year later, he found out different.

There's another similarity too. OBL has told us what he intends. Hitler did so, too, in "Mein Kampf".

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes.
