Who are the officers (at what level) who should be calling people's attention to this? Yes.. that's the responsibility that comes with being a commander.. You're ultimately responsible for whatever happens with your men. But commanders delegate tactical responsibility their subordinates. And in this case, it was definitely at the company, or platoon level (Captain, or Lieutenant). But KLP, I really HATE being in a situation where I'm second-guessing the decisions these commanders made from the comfort of "Ft. Livingroom". I don't know the extenuating circumstances that led to 10 men being ordered to hold a "Patrol Base" and why it required a QRF one hour to respond to explosions near that Patrol Base. QRF (reaction force) is usually set up at company level, but in this case, it might have been the platoon commander who was responsible for having at least 1 squad on 5 minute stand by, with all of their gear packed on their vehicles, and ready to move on a moment's notice. All of this, sadly, reminds me of that 6 member Marine sniper team who were caught napping, and executed point blank, back in 2005. And from the information I gleaned during the review of that attack, there was definitely a low-level leadership failure, complacency/dereliction of duty on the part of the team, and a failure of their immediate chain of command in reacting to losing contact with them. I suspect the same thing may have happened in the case with this recent ambush. But like I said, I need more information.. But my gut tells me that someone F'd up, and F'd up badly, and it got 7 of our soldiers (and one 'terp) killed, and the ability for the enemy to capture, torture, and execute, 3 others. I would be really curious to have Uncle West weigh in on this.. Hawk
