People are as prone to fight to resist the spread of a 'message' as they are to proliferate the spread of a 'message'.

And that is how India and Pakistan came to be 2 separate nations.

Islam has spread thoughout the world including America without relying on violence to spread it's message. Violence has been employed by corrupt extremists but certainly the message of the religion has spread more broadly without relying on violence.

Not sure I completely buy this argument anymore than I would Catholics asserting that dominance of Catholics in Latin America today was due to voluntary conversion hundreds of years ago.

We certainly know that the reason so many Bosnians and Kosavars, both sharing similar slavic orgins as the Serbs and Croats, converted to Islam is because the Ottoman Turks made it very difficult to live and enjoy the same benefits as their muslim masters.. And the Catholics and Protestants were no better.. Nor are the Jews.

The confederate states of America were democratic and were defeated by the Northern States of America and forced to live under a Union of states.

Yes, certainly this was the case in the beginning of our country's history, where "a house divided cannot stand" was the rally cry to war (as well as abolition).. But I'm not sure if a series of states attempted to secede in today's environment whether we'd embark on a similar civil war. I think most Americans would just say "good riddance" (along with "I'll see you in court" to dispute property issues, pensions, and general state-based entitlements).

The recent spread of Islam into Europe and America has been via immigration and not violence. But if you think the original explosion of Islam out of Arabia was done via some peaceful merger & acquisition, I suggest you consult the history books.

The first expansion of Islam was stopped by four major battles in the 8th century CE, the westernmost of which took place in Southern France and the easternmost took place in Western China.
