yes there has been violence in Islam to convert folks. But it has not always been violence - often it has been choice. Consider the Moghul Empire in India (before the brits came in). Some of the Moghul emperors chose violence / penalties to convert folks to Islam. Many others married into the Hindu community, and got a flow on effect where others converted to Islam. Remember, in those days "India" stretched from current "west Afghanistan" all the way thru current "east Burma/Myanmar" Bottom line : its a grey area, not black/white.
