The way this is always overcome is when the general population feels that the foreigners pose no threat and that overall they have added not subtracted from the culture.

The problem is that many Americans think Spanish is a threat to the culture, not an addition. It most certainly is being "added" to the culture. It is true, that subsequent generation learn and speak English, but where I live, we have gone from pure English 20 years ago, to almost complete bilingual access in any business in town with more than one clerk. Radio, TV, and print media also supports this trend. Hard to imagine that the increased use of Spanish, will instead result in Hispanics learning more English and resulting in an eventual collapse of Spanish use here. Some people seem to claim that will actually happen. I think bilingual is here to stay, and I don't think the fraction of Spanish users has peaked yet either. Might not become a majority, but perhaps it will.

May 5 celebrations are almost as big a deal as July 4 in town. Another cultural addition. My Mom likes seeing all the little Hispanic kids in their fancy dress clothes. So it does indeed add a nice splash of color to our culture. Our town newspaper (weekly) has a photo section "Most Wanted" which features the mug shots of the weeks police victims. Usually 3-4/week. Most weeks it is all Hispanic males with DUI arrests. Another cultural addition. A little alarming given that Hispanics are only 35% of the population, so I would expect 1 out of 3, not 3/3.
