<how he would WIN a positive result in Iraq> The US invasion and occupation of Iraq has been an abject failure -- now you want a magic solution that makes a silk purse out of a sows ear. We invaded -- it was a bad idea. We screwed up again and again. Its a mess -- a sad tragic mess. There is no happy ending. Don't blame others for what you have wrought. The job of those that follow will be damage control -- cleaning up this mess as best it can be cleaned up. The stain of this will be with us for a long time.

Someone like Webb should have some positive ideas...but look at his face....he is just snarly. What an ugly man.

I'm still waiting for Sen. Webb (my Senator) to provide us a PROPER SOLUTION to how he would WIN a positive result in Iraq, or in Afghanistan for that matter...

I'll bite!

1- Encourage the separation of Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq. Kurdistand would likely allow US military bases, thus solving the US's desire for continued military presence in the region. Kurdistand would sit between Israel, Turkey and Iran with US military presence, thus (hopefully) discourage those there from invading. And, they got oil, so they can be the source for building a democratic, pro-western success story in the region.

2- Pursue the stabilization of Lebanon by evicting the various terror groups, isolating Syria, supporting the current pro-western government, and voila you have another chance at a democratic, pro-western success story in the region. Plus, you have the pro-western "block" of Israel-Lebanon-Kurdistan-Turkey. These nations are our allies, are almost geographically contiguous (irritating Syria sits in between Kurdistan and Lebanon), and we support them economically, making the remaining anti-US countries jealous.

3- As for the remainder of Iraq, pull the US presence out and see what happens. It's a wildcard. Unlike Afghanistan, they have money due to the oil, so the ability to transform the nation back to the 7th century is going to get quashed by the desire to own BMWs and Satellite TV. Modernity should naturally be able to defeat the forces that want to pull the population back to the Middle Ages, but that's their fight and all the US presence does is provide for an excuse of someone else to blame when one of them blows up ten of them.

How's that sound?
