You were applying the term to a whole area of people, who happen to be of a certain ethnicity. Did you not know you did that?

It would be like me saying, "All those Congolese are mental midgets" or "All those Japanese are mental midgets". Or..."All the Israelis are mental midgets". Do you have any doubt Nadine would scream racism if someone said that? Heck, I think you would- if we hadn't just had this discussion.

IMO
Equating mental midget to illiteracy isn't accurate. Mental midget implies someone who lacks the ability to think or learn, a low IQ; illiteracy is merely an inability to read, probably because one hasn't been taught.
When you apply mental midget (bearing in mind this definition), you are claiming that an entire ethnic group is incapable of learning.
