<haven't said how you'd proceed if you were calling the shots>

First, I would start by restoring US credibility -- job one would be fire Cheney and investigate him for his role in a variety of criminal activities.

Second, I would apologize to the world for the US invading Iraq without a clue as to how to do it without causing the destruction of Iraq or a clue as to how to protect Iraqis from the horrors to which they are now subjected daily. I would meet with leaders of countries in the region and tell them this is it -- if they want to retain their leadership positions in countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, they are going to have to step up and get tough on terrorism. I would tell Iran that we are prepared to bomb them back to the 8th century if they mess with us, but I would take no unilateral hostile action on Iran or Syria.
I would make clear that we cannot continue as we are in Iraq and would set a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops.

Third, I would refocus forces on core elements of terrorism -- including those in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan where the worst of our problems still reside.

Fourth, I would re-open our borders to the educated elite of the world and their children. I would bump up scholarship money for the world's best and the brightest to come to the US to go to school to assure that the US is THE magnet for the best and the brightest in the world.

Fifth, I would pursue immigration reform -- an area where I wish Bush had prevailed with his initiative, flaws and all.

Sixth, I would quadruple the diplomatic core of the US Government -- we are way tilted towards viewing the rest of the world as targets rather than people and partners.

Seventh, I would go to the UN and tell the world that we are no longer going to pursue a unilateral foreign policy.

Eighth, I would go to Asia and say that the pattern of development we have seen so far has led to serious problems that must be solved or we are going to destroy our economic foundation, our environment and all end up the poorer for it. I would establish a major educational, economic and diplomatic drive to bring India, China and the rest of Asia closer to the US.

Ninth, I would declare war on global warming and push for carbon taxes and dramatic reduction in the use of carbon fuels.

Tenth, I would also declare a national day of shame for all of those Americans who have promoted war like it was toothpaste.
