Political response.Second, I would apologize to the world for the US invading Iraq without a clue as to how to do it without causing the destruction of Iraq or a clue as to how to protect Iraqis from the horrors to which they are now subjected daily. I would meet with leaders of countries in the region and tell them this is it -- if they want to retain their leadership positions in countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, they are going to have to step up and get tough on terrorism. You're going to abjectly apologize for removing Saddam and them start threatening regional leaders lest they be removed from power. Heh heh. As I recall a major complaint against Saddam was the very thing you complained about above - support for terrorism.I would tell Iran that we are prepared to bomb them back to the 8th century if they mess with us, but I would take no unilateral hostile action on Iran or Syria. So the threat of bombing Iran back to the 8th century would be a bluff? Personally I think bombing Iran might be on the table but I would only bomb their nuclear facilities ... that is bomb them back to say 1995 instead of the 8th century. BuI would make clear that we cannot continue as we are in Iraq and would set a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops. Is that all troops? What about air/artillery support, supply, trainers, SF's? Iraq doesn't possess its own air/artillery power. Next, would you consult the UN and Iraqi gov't on this? After all, we are there currently under their express authorization.Third, I would refocus forces on core elements of terrorism -- including those in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan where the worst of our problems still reside. Sounds fine but I don't know what it means specifically to "refocus forces" - does that involve sending troops anywhere? Also what about Al Qaida in Iraq? Fourth, I would re-open our borders to the educated elite of the world and their children. I would bump up scholarship money for the world's best and the brightest to come to the US to go to school to assure that the US is THE magnet for the best and the brightest in the world. I don't know what this has to do with the ME. Our borders aren't closed so they don't need to be reopened - we continue to take in legal immigrants all the time and educate people from all over the world in our universities. Which we should continue to do. Fifth, I would pursue immigration reform -- an area where I wish Bush had prevailed with his initiative, flaws and all. Again what this has to do with the ME is a mystery. Personally I think we should increase the number of legal immigrants we take in, but redouble efforts to keep out illegal entrants ( I've decided immigrants isn't the correct term to use for illegals). As for the recent bill, it seemed to reward illegal entrance - that was a flaw that justified its rejection.Sixth, I would quadruple the diplomatic core of the US Government -- we are way tilted towards viewing the rest of the world as targets rather than people and partners. Ugh, I think the problem with our diplomats is they seem to represent the world, including our enemies, to us. Not the other way round. We should get rid of the diplomats who see themselves as representing other countries. Clientism is a major problem. Seventh, I would go to the UN and tell the world that we are no longer going to pursue a unilateral foreign policy. I note you already unilaterally decided to withdraw from Iraq w/o consulting the UN which authorizes us being there. A contradiction - is the no unilateral foreign policy have an exception for stuff you really want to do? Eighth, I would go to Asia and say that the pattern of development we have seen so far has led to serious problems that must be solved or we are going to destroy our economic foundation, our environment and all end up the poorer for it. I would establish a major educational, economic and diplomatic drive to bring India, China and the rest of Asia closer to the US. Sounds like what we've been doing. Consider the initiatives the US has taken with India. Ninth, I would declare war on global warming and push for carbon taxes and dramatic reduction in the use of carbon fuels. WAy off topic here as is the formal demonization of people you don't like politically below. Tenth, I would also declare a national day of shame All in all, your ideas seem internally contradictory and driven by domestic political issues. Forswearing unilateralism and the removal of rogue dictators like Saddam .... while threatening other leaders in the ME with removal from power or being bombed into the 8th century and deciding unilaterally to pull out of Iraq w/o consulting the UN which has authorized us being there .... Surely you can see the contradictions here.
