I don't think this obsessing about what to call the enemy is at all a waste of time. To accurately name your enemy is to know your enemy. I've learned a lot about them over the past couple of years as we grope for the right nomenclature.
You have to know him to defeat him.

The word Shaheed is in the online dictionary fwiw. And I agree that the term martyr can be used in a generic way to describe anyone willing to die rather than renounce his or her religion.
