But things that smack of strongarm tactics rub me the wrong way.

Banning formula is hardly a "strong arm tactic." Declining to endorse and facilitate some product freebies is pretty mild. If the companies want to get their product to new mothers, they can mail complimentary packages to their homes. The companies aren't being harmed, merely no longer subsidized.

I don't understand why you view this as strongarming. Outlawing formula or forcing mothers to breastfeed with no alternatives, not that would be strongarming. Unambiguously promoting the healthiest choice isn't.

This isn't a black-white, good-bad issue. Nor is it a moral choice that means a mother who chooses formula for whatever reason is a bad mother who is actively "hurting" her baby. She is, however, not choosing the ideal mealplan, proven to have wonderful benefits for baby and her. THis is counseling new moms on the best choice, and not offering anything else that distracts from that choice.

Many babies do fine on formula, but I don't see it as the hospital's job to do free advertising for Enfamil when it undermines their efforts to get moms to breasfeed. That just doesn't feel like strongarming to me, but an attempt at giving an infant the best start possible without adding the allure of an inferior but easier method.

I think I will save my outrage for something I think is truly invasively controlling and not responsible health care.
