England, when Dickens was writing about it, and the workhouses, and the state of public hospitals, you will see what you get when you rely on charity.

Ik, that strikes me as a silly comparison. Given the level of wealth at the time, I'd guess private charities did a pretty good job. Given the level of wealth here today, charities would provide exponentially better.

And if all the folks involved in redistribution had to find real jobs, it'd be even better.
