The Quran also tells Christians and Jews that they must submit to the superiority of Muslims and pay them a special "protection" tax.

You ascribe the views of the fanatical fringe to the whole of the ummah. I do not think so. Based on reading a large number of books and articles it is my impression that the eventual acceptance of Islam by the entire world is one of the basic assumptions of that religion. Fortunately, it appears that most of them are not taking this injunction too literally. I know that we will continue to share this planet with the 1.3 - 1.5 billion Muslims - for practical purposes, forever. We'll be much better off if most of them will remain our friends. The main long term purpose of our sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan is to prevent the islamist fringe from capturing political power in the Muslim world -- and installing totalitarian regimes. We are not fighting against Muslims -- we are fighting FOR them
