quiet computers

except for my @$#!% G5 iMac that has a really annoying whine until you put it to sleep (by pressing the power button once, not by shotgun)

(Yes I opened it and cleaned it out)

(Yes I am now typing on a newer intel iMac which is completely silent except for the barely audible hum of its hard drives, so the G5 iMac was a bit of a fluke except for the fact its my home computer)

While very, very quiet, the iMacs are not silent as they only use a semi-passive cooling system. The iMac G4 may have been passive (not sure one way or the other) but the G5 and Intel-based iMacs have multiple fans (either 2 or 3) and the reports are that the Intel iMacs run quieter still.

Yup, these iMacs are fairly quiet. The original G3 iMacs used completely passive cooling, but since then, they've acquired fans. The first gen. G5 iMacs were actually pretty noisy. And, if I recall correctly, Doren's G5 mirror door tower was noisy.

Now that I've learned here that the newer iMacs are quieter than these G5s, I've got another reason to upgrade.

WOO HOO! I gettin' another computer!

I love my quiet computers.

Unfortunately, my MBP can sound like a hairdryer when it's doing heavy lifting (such as ripping DVDs ;) in an un-airconditioned room.
