I like Obama's strong stance against special interest lobbyists. That alone should get him the nomination if the American public really cares about ethics in government. I haven't decided who I will vote for, if I vote, but I like Obama's ethical approach.

Ikt, re: "I can't even stand saying the pledge anymore, and not because I don't love this country, but because of the moronic jingoistic stupidity that goes along with such pledges.

I agree wholeheartedly. I wrote a post about the greatness and the dangers of nationalism at about the time the war drums were sounding for the Iraq war. The point of my post was that nationalism is a dangerous passion subject to manipulation and misuse by those with hidden agendas.

I was, at that time, the president of a school board and at the beginning of every meeting we would all stand for the pledge of allegiance. I always stood with my arms at my sides and never recited the pledge.

The other board members at times commented and asked me if I had any problems with the pledge. I told them that it "felt" wrong to me because in the past so many wrongs had been papered over by blind patriotism.

I think it's the same reluctance many of us feel about Christianity; religion can be a great thing but it too is dangerously subject to manipulation and misuse. When such powerful passions are misused the harm is often substantial and I'm wary of those who wrap themselves in either religion or the flag.

But then I've always been reluctant to march in lockstep and I've always questioned those who did. Ed
