One of the things that made America great was not the exploitation of natural resources, but the people who took every opportunity to make a buck for themselves.

I did some research recently in some old issues of the Daily Oregonian, the predecessor of today's fishwrap. Even then it was realized that riches were all around just waiting to be exploited.

"One of the things that made America great was not the exploitation of natural resources" rather exploitation and/or extermination of the the original inhabitants of America and 200 odd years of slavery.
