It also isn't health insurance. I don't think I've been defending the status quo (at least not here) in insurance against hurricane damage.

Also opposing any of the specific plans for changes, or more generally opposing a much larger role for the government isn't really defending the status quo.

That's one of those figments that you won't let go. I don't see anyone here defending the status quo. If you see someone defending the status quo, please point it out. If you can't find any examples, stop spreading the falsehood.
