I've said this on this thread more often than I should but here I go again, try medicare. I might have said something a little like you just said before I was eligible for medicare and saw how the system actually worked.

It's the private insurers that have been a very serious problem in my cases. My wife's supplemental insurance through CUNY is terrible in this regard; just keeps firing back the paperwork in apparent hope you'll give up. My supplemental tries to do something like that but I'm able to call my university personnel people and they always work some form of magic.

My doctors and the woman I work with at the university, folk who are deeply immersed in all the perplexities of the system, will go on forever about the destructive character of all this paperwork, rules on top of rules, etc.

I don't mind if we try middle of the road proposals first. I suspect they will fail, and we will continue to be miserable, and our health care system will fall further behind the rest of the West, and then, maybe, we'll finally try single payer. I don't think single payer will be perfect, but I suspect it will be better than what we have, or the mish mash we'll get with stop gap partial solutions.
