I feel fortunate to have joined the military and left, never to seriously look back. Anyone stuck in the inner city can do this today, provided they play by the rules and are willing to work hard.

Well said. Military service does offer a realistic way out.

My father, a WWII Vet, used the GI Bill, to educate himself and later to buy his first home nothing down.

His brothers did the same then or after serving in Korea.

The GI Bill paid for my BA, and enabled me to purchase my first home with zero down AND a lower than market interest rate.

Great post.

While some 'understand' why Wright does what he does and suggest he is simply part of an essentially innocent culture, in point of fact this kind of attitude is nothing but the support of reverse racism.

Yes, there are bright lines. If you detest someone because he is white or black or brown, you are a racist. If you attend and support a church that teaches a racist message, you are mollycoddling racism and are likely a racist yourself. And if you knowingly expose your kids to this kind of indoctrination, you are the worst kind of parent imaginable, one who teaches hate.

It is no excuse that blacks have been oppressed. Hate and racism is.......hate and racism. There is no justification for it in this day and age. Obama might very well be hiding some attitudes which are deeply ingrained but which will never be revealed.

In Obama's case, show me what he does, not what he says. Anyone can craft and deliver a good speech. Did he reject Wright's message when the spotlight was not on him, when it counted? Doesn't sound like it. He seems to have embraced it.

Mike, over the years you've written many notes to us here on SI...this one is one of the very best, IMO. It is heartfelt, and one that everyone everywhere can think about and learn from.

I'm very proud of you, my friend!

my youth was all white. We had 14 bar rooms within four blocks of my house and five churches. ge was running 24/7 back then and if you got a job there you made decent money if not on strike. drunks were 24/7 because of the three shifts at ge, bars were usually busy most of the time.

my point is you could lift yourself up, get education or decent job or just exist in the neighborhood, grow up and be another drunk.

we all had choices , zip for guidance back then.

No race issues to blame for our failings.

I live in a mixed race neighborhood that works very well. All one has to do is look at the folks that live here. Folks who represent people from many of the nations on Earth....... Asians, Hispanics, Italians, Blacks, Scotch/Irish, German and Middle Easterners. Average Americans that all manage to live responsible and harmonious lives.

Every one of us get up every morning and go to jobs where we work hard. This allows us to pay our taxes, contribute to our communities and personally prepare for what lies down the road. We've all decided that we want America to be a better and stronger and more prosperous place.

We all believe that we are bona fide Americans.

We go to church, shop locally, work locally, contribute to local charities, pay our taxes, save money, and we all get along just fine.

We are all products of the American dream.

We are role models for every person that wants to live that dream, and we've decide that we do not want to live the life that Obama, his Church and his followers thrive on.

One neighbor is a very successful Real Estate Broker.......a Black man........who has a wife that teaches at a local Jr. High School, and three successful kids, and a couple of grandkids too.

How, oh how did he manage to do that?

If politicians like Obama were to ask us.........just ask us if we feel betrayed or slighted or wanting or in need, I think he'd be very disappointed with our answers.

He could do every American a kind favor if he just talked to us and listened to us. He'd learn how we've managed to be successful, and he might be confused because he would not recognize the America he perceives. He'd be wise to pass along our message and remind people that anything is possible if they listened and learned, and put into action the lessons we can teach, and practice the methods that give us hope and confidence and real wealth and success.

Instead.......it seems to me........he's decided that the best way to reach HIS goals is to divide people and play the race and class card.

He is a very typical, liberal politician.
