Agree with Ray. While the Fed may try to walk the line, it is possible that they may not be able to control events. Prechter many years ago was talking (in the Tidal Wave) about an eventual hyperinflationary period which was going to be triggered by a massive "repatriation" of dollars (read: panic selling of Treasuries) by foreign holders.

Prechter expected that first there would be a deflationary episode - which (still) may or may not happen. People find it hard to imagine that the USD may get into real trouble - but if you think about it, national fiat currencies keep disappearing all over the place, wiping out people's savings -- and nothing much happens. They print pretty new money, and life goes on. In recent decades Argentina, Israel and Russia come to mind.
