Our system generally works better when each side can act as a check and balance the other political side.

Checks and balances were designed to put constraints on each party.

When any party has total control it is often ruinous...........we just had a GOP run where they controlled all branches and look where we are today?

During Bill Clinton's first term the Democrats had total control and that was also ruinous. It led to the GOP takeover of both houses in Congress.

If any party is afraid to fight for legislation that represents it's core values they disrupt the way democracy works.

We desperately need to have all sides of any issue argued passionately.

Otherwise, we have a group of lemmings following their leader to ruination.

So - my sense is that true Republican principles were not tried

Do you have any thoughts on what went wrong?

Bob we won't know whether or not it is ruinous until we test it.

There were many Democratic administrations that were not bad
in that the spending was not out of control. Those programs that were instituted at one time by Democrats have been a
panacea to many Americans. We cannot all Atlas Shrugged
devotees.

So - my sense is that true Republican principles were not tried. None-the-less, I feel a fullup Democratic government will be ruinous.

Do you think McCain will be able to implement true R principles?

As for total control by dems being ruinous, I assume you mean in terms of fiscal, budgetary responsibility?

The historical evidence suggests otherwise. Read both of Syb's post on that to get a different flavor.

McCain promises:

1. "Win" the Iraq war. And after winning it, stick around practically for ever.

2. Not only no rollback of Bush's tax cuts, but MORE tax cuts.

Do you think that his program will be less ruinous than the Democrats'?
