Allen,

I am surprised that David Axlerod did not anticipate and attempt to diffuse the Wright issue before Obama announced his candidacy. He certainly had to have been aware that it was a potential problem.

I have lived in or around Chicago all of my life. I grew up on the South Side, no more than five miles from Trinity Church. Over the years I have spent a lot of time in most of the neighborhoods on the South Side, both black and white. One could easily characterize the political rhetoric on the South Side, particularly in Hyde Park, as "extreme." I have always suspected that because Obama has lived so long in an environment where extreme rhetoric is the norm, it may have become background noise to him and he did not consider how it would be interpreted elsewhere. By the way, I do not consider Obama to be an extremist, though I do consider him to be very liberal.

Last month, someone asked me if Wright had been an issue in Obama's Senate run. This was my response:

Message 24416069

I have repeatedly expressed the opinion that Obama has a history of being too deferential to individuals who have either assisted him or mentored him. Rezko and Wright are prime examples of this tendency. Emil Jones has yet to hit the stage. It is a bad habit for a potential president.

I hope that you are feeling better this evening.

Regards,

Glenn

Allen, I don't think people believe that Obama's views are anywhere near Rev. Wright's views. But what they are looking in Obama is that fighting spirit in him where he needs to step in and recognize that Rev. Wright's utterances are a distraction to the people's concerns namely kitchen table issues. This is not about Black/White church. not about what Rev. Wright said "I am coming after you since now you represent the repressive American Govt." etc.

He needs to show leadership, act very quickly and move this nation back to focussing on the issues they care about.

This is his swiftboat. This is the Bernard Shaw-Dukakis moment. My question: If he cannot take on his own pastor, how can he take on Osama and the AQ?
