I think it's actually extremely difficult to cash a check for a dime over $10,000. I'm talking about turning it into actual cash.

This kind of scam is more common than you might think. I heard a story, which I know to be true, where a guy came with a cashier's check for $30 grand wanting to buy a truck from another guy who wanted to sell his truck for $29,900. ( made up the numbers 'cause I can't remember the actual ones). The transaction was completed and the first guy drove off with the truck. The second guy tried to cash the check, but the bank said it was fraudulent. It was actually a cashier's check for $3 and had been altered. Too late. The truck disappeared. About a year later the truck was recovered at a routine traffic stop and the perp was arrested for grand theft auto. Apparently he really liked the truck and had taken good care of it. Bottom line, don't take cashier's checks made out for an amount different than the asking price. When I bought a truck from a private party we went to the bank together and completed the transaction. No problem.
