I think the long article by Packer that John posted addressed that question. I don't have the link right now but his premise was that , as I recall, Bush just happened to put the finishing touches on 'The fall of conservatism'

why positions that used to win elections, albeit by narrow margins nationally, have fallen into such disfavor

It could be that the guys with those positions just knocked each other out or had other fatal flaws. It could be that the primary voters thought that going for a narrow margin was too risky. It could be just the eventual entropy in the odd coalition that mad up the R party. I don't know that the positions are necessarily in disfavor, other than the foreign adventure one, that is.

I saw this poll today. It seems like some folks are re-evaluating the coalition. The fiscal conservatives and the libertarians must sure be cranky right now.
