I am not encouraged by the facility by which he decided to take the money and break his pledge on public financing.

Think 527s. I like the fact that Obama has always spoken from a position of strength. That is how he is going to deal with Ahmedinijad. Tell him that he wants to talk to him. When it does not work out, he will use the military option.

Vintner: "Obama is certainly smart. But I think the great men have "character" (And from this "greatness" I would exclude Jack Kennedy--although he was coming along for sure) and when "character" meets cataclysmic world events the opportunity for "Greatness" arises.

Koan: what do you mean no charcter. His sex escapdes. who cares??

What defines a man or women's character Vintner is how they address important issues. Like segregation (where was Eisenhower?) which is 10 million times more of a "character issue than sex. JFK sent the national guard to integrate thsoe schools and protect the little black girls and boys! Tha is real character!

JFK: When eisenhower left office he had 56 mafia chiftons under invetistigation or indictment (can't remember). 18 months after JFK was eleted Bobby Kennedy had 2600 under indictment.

That is why I always thought the mafia killed JFK.

JFK probably prevented a nuclear war during the cuban missle crises by trumping that dumb ass Curtis Lemay who firebombed every village in Japan and probably with glee!. That is character.

A BJ ranks about 9 zillionth in the character arena.

Vintner: "Does Obama have character? The jury is out for me. And we won't know until events unfold. He may be just a smart politician. I am not encouraged by the facility by which he decided to take the money and break his pledge on public financing. That is what any smart politician would do. But this doesn't smack of "greatness" to me--not yet--maybe not ever."

koan: "Regarding his changing his word about public campaign financing he saw if he could not use his money he would probably stand a good chance of losing.

So he made an existential decision. He had a delimma. The right wing is going to come at him with the most vicious stuff you ever saw. Look what they did to the war hero Max Cleland (tied him to osam bin laden) ;and look what they did with that sleezy ad to harold ford which pisses off dumb white men to think of a white woman with a black guy: "call em harold". Or the swiftboating or Willie Horton.

Hasn't bush and Cheney and rove and Card and on and on and on been enough for you to see the evil men in control of our country. Vicious men!

Obama knows he is going to face the forces of hell from rove and the rest of those scumbags and he needs ammunition. He did the right thing. It also shows he will be able to deal with china, russia and the middle east in a totally pragmatic manner.

And Obama knows what an existential decision is. Bush does nothave a clue what existentialism even means!

Did you read "his pledge on public financing" that you say he broke?

I happened to see USA Today the day his letter to the editor on this was published.

You are mistaken.

Obama did not break any pledge, because his statement was that he would like to sit down with McCain and work out an agreement. But that was a long time ago and lo and behold now, McCain is 200 million behind in fundraising and wants Obama to go with public financing only and drop down to his unpopular level. Well, is Obama a fool? Suicidal? And didn't McCain himself promise to go with public financing to back a loan he took out, then reverse course?

Make no mistake, every politician changes his mind from time to time, but no one has flipflopped as much as the top two Republicans McCain and Romney in the past year or so. They have literally tried to change their stripes. And in not positive ways either. In pro-corruption, pro big business, pro-war, pro-deficit spending ways.

if Obama ever breaks a pledge which hurts anyone but his REepublicxan rival I will be on your side. But the only person who got hurt by Obama's decision was the GOP, who in no way deserve to win the White House again. They have disgraced and betrayed this country. They need a long time-out in the dog house to think about how immoral and unethical they have been.

Vintner, I suppose you think Hillary has character? Obama's life has been a demonstration of his character.
