Fingers and nose aside, water pipes need to be kept from freezing. A slow drip helps, but wastes water.

I knew you'd claim that whatever I said wasn't a problem :) Most people aren't doing heavy labor no-stop inside their houses... But definitely there could be more efficient ways of heating houses so the heat was only where you needed it, much like lighting can be directed to small areas. We use reverse cycle air conditioning which is much more efficient in the kind of temperatures experienced here - frost this morning, for example, but never below about 6C in day time ever (July average 0-11C daily min and max). But still the apartment comes equipped with one unit in the worst place in the middle of the living room (rental, so nothing we can do about it).
